Fifth Grade

Our goal as fifth grade teachers is to foster the students' self-sufficiency, in both academic and personal pursuits. We are dedicated to instilling a sense of responsibility, a good work ethic, and an accepting attitude towards all people. We encourage students to develop their talents in academics in the classroom, while challenging their talents during and after school hours.

Fifth grade is an exciting and challenging year! Students will be given many opportunities to become responsible, independent learners in preparation for their transition to middle school. We will also enjoy participating in the Super Kids program and taking several fun field trips. Here's a glance at the curriculum:

English Language Arts

  • Use the reading process successfully
  • Construct meaning from a wide range of texts
  • Use the writing process to communicate ideas clearly and effectively
  • Use listening, viewing, and speaking skills with efficiency
  • Use document based historical text to create and written essay of our ideas. 

Science:

  • Understand the nature of energy
  • Understand the types of force and motion
  • Recognize the processes that shape the earth
  • Understand how living things interact with their environment
  • Use the scientific process to solve problems
  • Lunar and Solar eclipse, phases of the moon, water cycle, ecosystem, and food and web chains, seasons change, mechanical and chemical weathering

Math:

  • Understand number systems
  • Understand different ways number systems are represented
  • Select appropriate operations and compute for problem solving
  • Understand and apply theories related to numbers
  • Measure quantities to solve problems
  • Compare, contrast, and convert within systems of measurements
  • Estimate measurements in real-world problem situations
  • Select an use appropriate units and measurement instruments
  • Describe and analyze two- and three- dimensional shapes
  • Visualize and illustrate ways shapes can be changed
  • Use coordinate geometry to locate and describe objects algebraically
  • Describe, analyze, and inequalities, graphs, and formulas to represent and interpret situations
  • Understand and use tools of data analysis to mange information
  • Identify patterns and make predictions use statistical methods to make predictions

Social Studies:

  • Understand historical chronology and the historical perspective
